How it works
Simple and reliable
When electric motor is switched off Talas Dryer waits for 15 minutes (default setting) and then connects to the two phases of the motor circuit. It measures the insulation resistance by feeding direct current voltage to the circuit and then monitors the leakage current from the ground. When the insulation resistance is low Talas Dryer switches on the drying mode and starts to send direct current impulses to the windings of the electric motor. During the drying mode Talas Dryer also monitors the winding insulation and when the insulation
resistance has reached a satisfactory value the drying mode switches off and the measurement mode continues. When the motor receives a start command Talas Dryer disconnects from the motor circuit and goes to standby mode. Talas Dryer can be also used as an intellectual standby heater. In the standby heating mode lower current is used and the direct current feeding switches on regardless of the insulation resistance value. Insulation resistance is also monitored during the standby heating mode.
As stated in the book ”Electrical Insulation for Rotating Machines (2014)” about the usefulness of the insulation resistance test:
“In general, the IR/PI test is an excellent means of finding windings that are contaminated or soaked with moisture. Of course, the test is also good at detecting major flaws where the insulation is cracked or has been cut through”
and about the procedures if the winding temperature has been below the dew point and the insulation resistance test results are poor:
“It will probably be necessary to heat the winding by circulating hot air or passing current through the winding for hours or days to dry off the moisture that has condensed on it”
2 Form factors
Talas Dryer can be supplied in two different forms for
different installation conditions
Good and cost effective choice if there are several electric motors operating in harsh conditions and their MCCs are located close to each other.
The classic installation, one Talas Dryer for one electric motor. Good option when there are only one or two motors in harsh conditions or MCCs are located in different places.
When several MCCs are located close to each other Talas Dryer cabinet can be “mounted” into your electric room as any other control or protection unit.
